MLEDP - Mt. Lebanon Extended Day Program

Professional, Affordable, Convenient Before and After School Child Care

Mt. Lebanon Extended Day Program (MLEDP) has seven school locations and one all day summer site which meet the educational and safety standards, and accredited staff licensing requirements of the state of Pennsylvania.

Our staff provides educational assistance according to the Department of Public Welfare (DPW) Child Care Licensing Regulations to children in grades K-5 on a daily basis.

Guided activities encompass use of math, reading, social studies, science and language arts skills along with socialization skills, indoor and outdoor play. Our staff members plan educational activities using the Kolb Experiential Learning model.

No child care organization in the area provides such high quality at such a low cost.

MLEDP operates 3 different programs throughout the year:

Kindergarten Care:
Operates two sessions: Morning and Afternoon
Morning Session: Open 7:00 AM to 12:30 PM
Afternoon Session: Open 11:15 AM through 6:30 PM

School Year Care:
Open Before & After School, grades 1st through 5th: Opens before school at 7:00 AM and operates until 6:30 PM after school is out.

Summer Fun:
Camp-Like Atmosphere for youth, who have completed grades K through 5th, starting at: 7:00 AM and running all day until 6:30 PM

Mt. Lebanon Extended Day Program (MLEDP) is a non-profit community-based organization that cares about the out-of-school time needs of children and families.

MLEDP is dedicated to providing professional, affordable, and convenient school-age childcare year round while delivering a recognized, high-quality program for the children and families we serve.

MLEDP History and Organizational Milestones

Formed in response to community need in 1987, MLEDP began before and after school programming in two elementary schools for 19 children and now provides care year round for children in each Mt. Lebanon neighborhood.

• Spring 1986: Community Relations Board survey to the Community: results show a stated need for safe, caring places for school-age children
• October 1986: Mt. Lebanon School Board provided space & supplies for a short time to help form MLEDP
• Spring 1987: MLEDP incorporated as a non-profit corporation
• August 1987: Opened two sites - Howe School and Washington School
• August 1988: Opened two additional sites - Lincoln School and Jefferson School
• August 1989: Opened two additional sites - Foster School and Markham School
• June 1991: Opened Summer Fun - full day care during the summer recess
• August 1993: Opened Kindergarten Care Program
• Fall 1995: Begin transportation service for Kindergarten Care and summer pool days
• February 2001: The MLEDP Center at Lincoln School was accredited by the National School Age Care Alliance. This is the first school-age accreditation for MLEDP and also the first in Western Pennsylvania and only the fourth in the State of Pennsylvania
• May - June, 2001: The MLEDP Center at Howe School was accredited by the National School Age Care Alliance
• June 2003: The MLEDP Center at Jefferson School is accredited by the National School Age Care Alliance
• August 2003: Opened new site at Dormont School
• September 2003 - 2005: Computers purchased and Internet access available to centers
• September 2005: Opened new site at Hoover School

Admissions, the provisions of services, and referrals of clients shall be made without regard to race, color, religious creed, disability, ancestry, national origin (including limited English proficiency) age or sex.

Program services shall be made accessible to eligible persons with disabilities through the most practical and economically feasible methods available. These methods include, but are not limited to, equipment redesign, the provision of aides, and the use of alternative delivery locations. Structural modifications shall be considered only as a last resort among available methods.

The Board of Directors is made up of community volunteers who believe that high quality care should be available for all families needing care. To that end, the Board makes financial assistance funds available annually.

The Board sets high standards for programming and staffing and provides staff with a comprehensive benefits plan and educational opportunities.

MLEDP constantly strives to be the highest-quality childcare program that kids love and our families trust. Although we take great pride in our skilled staff and valuable programs, we are committed to continually improving who we are and how we serve. This is to assure you of our concern for the safety and welfare of the children attending the Mt. Lebanon Extended Day School Year Programs at our Centers. Our Emergency Operations Plan provides for responses to different types of emergencies. Depending on the circumstances of the emergency, we will use one of the following protective actions.

• Immediate Evacuation: Children will be evacuated to a designated safe area on the grounds (inside or outside) of the school, in the event of a fire or other on-site emergency.
• In-Place Sheltering: Sudden occurrences, weather or hazardous materials related may dictate that taking cover in the building is the best immediate response.
• Evacuation: Total evacuation of the facility may become necessary if there is danger in the area. In this case, children will be taken to one of two designated evacuation sites. Parents will be contacted.
  • Primary: Center for Theater Arts, 250 Mt. Lebanon Blvd.
  • Secondary: Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center, 900 Cedar Blvd.
• Modified Operation: May include cancellation/postponements or rescheduling of normal activities. These actions are normally taken in cases of severe weather conditions or building problems (such as, utility interruptions) that make it unsafe for children to travel or remain in the building.

• Listen to KDKA Radio 1020 AM or watch the Mt. Lebanon Cable Channel for announcements relating to any of the emergency actions listed above. If possible, an e-mail notice to your e-mail will be sent and if possible announcements will be posted on our website.

• We ask that you do not call during an emergency. This will keep the main telephone line free to make emergency calls and relay information. We will call you to let you know that we’ve taken one of the above protective actions. We will also call you when the situation has been resolved and it is safe to come and pick up your child.

• We specifically urge you not to make different arrangements during an emergency. This will only create additional confusion and divert staff from their assigned duties.
